How does Levitra work?

Levitra inhibits the production of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) which may slow or stop the formation of an erection. Levitra simply allows the body to go through its natural cycle of increasing the flow of blood into the penis to produce an erection.

What to tell your doctor

Before choosing to buy Levitra, ask your doctor to ensure that it will not interact adversely with any of the other drugs, health supplements and herbal remedies you already take. In particular, never give into the temptation to take Levitra at the same time as Viagra or Cialis. This can be a dangerous overdose.

Because sexual activity is exercise, a full health check-up is a good idea if you have a sedentary lifestyle. Otherwise, there is a risk that you will overexert yourself. The older you are, the greater the need to seek advice before taking Levitra.

Next, tell your doctor if:

• an erection was painful or lasted an unnaturally long time;
• your penis has changed shape; or
• your testicles are swollen or sore.

The cause should be established before you take a drug designed to produce a harder erection over a longer period of time.

Finally, Levitra does not have magic properties. If you have sexual intercourse without a condom, you may:

• contract one of the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs);
• pass your existing STD on to your partner; or
• find yourself a father unless your partner is taking independent contraceptive precautions.

Before taking Levitra

Before deciding to buy Levitra, ask your doctor about the risks if you have:

• any cardiovascular disease;
• one of the blood cell disorders;
• liver or kidney disease requiring you to be on dialysis; or
• night blindness, tunnel vision or other genetic eye problems.

Do not combine Levitra with any drug, whether medicinal or recreational, that contains a nitrate. Similarly, do not mix Levitra with the macrolide antibiotics, alpha blockers, the drugs used to treat arrhythmia and any combination of the drugs used to treat HIV infection. Dosage

Levitra is supplied in tablet form as 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg and 20mg doses, which should be taken between 25 and 60 minutes before you anticipate sexual activity. The usual safe starting dose is 10mg, taken as and when required, and not more than once per day. Do not crush or chew the tablets, but swallow them whole with plenty of water. If you take a pill after eating a big meal, it will take longer for Levitra to be absorbed into your blood stream.

Should you forget to take a dose, never double the next dose to "catch up". It can be dangerous to exceed the daily dose.

For storage, keep the tablets at room temperature in an airtight container, avoid excess heat and moisture, and keep them out of the reach of children.

Possible side-effects of Levitra

With Levitra, it is better not to drink alcohol at all but, if you cannot avoid it in a social context, drink only a little. Do not take Levitra and eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice. There are chemicals in grapefruit that affect the rate at which you body absorbs a drug into the blood stream.

Most men can use Levitra without any adverse Levitra side-effects. If side-effects do come, they are usually mild and transitory, including:

• flushing or blushing of the face or neck;
• a headache;
• an upset stomach, heartburn or nausea;
• cold symptoms of a stuffed-up or "runny" nose; or
• back pain.

Should you experience any of the following while engaging in sexual activity, stop immediately and call a doctor if:

• your erection is painful or lasts for an unnaturally long time;
• you feel dizzy or faint;
• your eyes are suddenly sensitive to light, everything has a blue tinge or you suddenly lose vision;
• you hear a ringing sound in your ears or suddenly lose your hearing;
• you feel nausea, heavy sweating and have difficulty in breathing;
• you feel your heart racing;
• you have an allergic reaction; or
• you have pain or numbness in your upper body.
